Vasiliy Parmenovich Obraztsov: a classic of Russian gastroenterology (1851–1920). Part 2

The authors offer to the readers’ attention a scientific biography of V.P.Obraztsov based on multiple archive documents and critical analysis of literature sources, cleared of many inaccuracies and direct mistakes, legends and conjectures, with which works about him are extremely abundant. The role of V.P.Obraztsov in preparing and holding the first congresses of Russian therapists has shown, his creation of an original scientific therapeutic school, mainly of the gastroenterological and cardiologic directions, probably the greatest in the twentieth-century Russia; the originality of the outstanding, complex and attractive personality of a physician and scientist and his nonstandard life with its tragic ending: illness, loneliness and poverty during his last year of life. The character of V.P.Obraztsov’s main scientific priorities is specified, including the development of the method of deep sliding (methodical) palpation of the abdominal organs. The authors do not claim but convincingly prove that after S.P.Botkin V.P.Obraztsov was the greatest figure in the history of Russian therapeutic theory and practice.
