An interrelation between vegetarianism and premature ovarian failure

Premature ovarian failure is a clinical syndrome, a typical manifestation of which is episodic or stable hypergonadotropic amenorrhoea in women under the age of 40. Consequences of premature ovarian failure are infertility, impaired quality of life and development of age-associated diseases, and causes of development of premature ovarian failure are still unclear, studies do not pay due attention to modified risk factors, such as diet and change of the way of life. Correlation between a vegetarian diet and premature ovarian failure has not been studied, nevertheless, studies are demonstrative of a relationship between a vegetarian diet and the age of onset of a natural menopause. Prospective studies are required to study an association between premature ovarian failure and modified idiopathic risk factors and to develop a pathogenetically justified prevention and treatment of sex hormone deficiency in patients of reproductive age diagnosed with premature ovarian failure.

Key words: vegetarisnism, hypogonadism, premature ovarian failure, reproductive system.
