The functional state of the pituitary-thyroid system of the fetus: problems to be solved

A review of literature deals with studying the structure and function of the thyroid gland of the fetus in normal pregnancy, and pathologies of the mother’s thyroid in complicated pregnancy. Evidence on the embryogenesis and formation of the function of  the  gland,  and  methods  of  its  ultrasound  scanning  are  presented.  The  review  summarizes  literature  data  on  changes occurring  in  the  fetus’  thyroid  gland  (both  hypo-,  and  hyperthyroidism)  in  the  thyroid  gland  pathology  in  the  mother-  it  is shown that fetoplacental insufficiency and fetal growth retardation syndrome are often accompanied by hypothyroidism of the fetus. In pregnancy complicated by gestosis an impaired function of the thyroid is also found, its severity depending on the severity of gestosis.
